Alzheimer’s Association offers free educational programs, other services across Erie County

Sep 30, 2018 | Events

The Alzheimer’s Association Western New York Chapter is planning a number of education programs across the county in October. These programs are free and open to the public.

On Oct. 3, the Chapter will lead a special Alzheimer’s and Dementia Community Forum. The public is invited to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and memory and share their ideas for programs or services they would find most beneficial for those facing the challenge of dementia. The Southtowns Family YMCA at 1620 Southwestern Blvd. in West Seneca will host the program from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

A Legal and Financial Planning workshop is set for 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 3 at the Clarence Senior Center, 4600 Thompson Road, for anyone who would like to know more about what legal and financial issues to consider when faced with the challenge of dementia and how to put plans in place.

A special three-part series for caregivers of those living with Middle Stage Dementia is set for three consecutive Mondays in October. Tips for Caregivers: Middle Stage will take place from 5:30 from 7 p.m. in Buffalo. Interested care partners must call 1-800-272-3900 for additional information.

On Oct. 16 at 11 a.m., the Town of Tonawanda Public Library, 160 Delaware Road in Kenmore, will host Effective Communication Strategies. This program is ideal for care partners of those living with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia, as it offers verbal and non-verbal strategies for caregivers to more effectively understand and communicate. This program will also be offered on Oct. 29 at the Elma United Methodist Church at 2991 Bowen Road at 5:30 p.m.

On Oct. 17, the Chapter office at 2805 Wehrle Drive, Suite 6 in Williamsville will host Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia at 3 p.m. This educational program covers the basics about the disease and related dementias.

This program will cover some common struggles and offer sound strategies to address them. It will also be offered in West Falls at the Community Library, 1966 David Road, on Oct. 24 at 6 p.m.

Montabaur Heights at 4530 Ransom Road in Clarence will host Understanding and Responding to Dementia-Related Behaviors at 11 a.m. on Oct. 23. Behavior is a powerful form of communication and is one of the primary ways for people with Alzheimer’s disease to communicate their needs and feelings as the ability to use language is lost. However, some behaviors can present real challenges for caregivers to manage.

While these programs are all free to attend, pre-registration is strongly encouraged to ensure there are enough materials and to relay any changes to the programs. To reserve a seat and learn more information about any of these programs, contact the Chapter office at 1-800-272-3900.
