Amanda Hansen Foundation, Buffalo Sabres to hold largest CO giveaway in the country

Feb 4, 2016 | In the News

The Amanda Hansen Foundation teamed up with the Buffalo Sabres during January’s Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month and collected an overwhelming amount of CO detectors from generous sponsors and fans.

“We were so overwhelmed by how many people wanted to help our foundation and our mission to see that no one loses a loved one again to CO poisoning,” said Ken Hansen, president of the Amanda Hansen Foundation.

The Amanda Hansen Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was founded in 2010 after Ken Hansen and his wife Kim lost their only daughter, Amanda, to carbon monoxide poisoning. In 2009, Amanda slept over a friend’s house that had high levels of CO in the home. The house did not have a CO detector and Amanda’s life was taken that very next morning.

“We never had the chance to say goodbye,” said Hansen.

Ever since that tragic day, the Hansens have made it their mission to see that no one loses a loved one again to this silent killer. Since CO poisoning is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas, there are no warning signs. The only way to protect your family from CO poisoning is to have a working CO detector. You should always have one in the basement and in the sleeping quarters of a home.

From noon to 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 15 at First Niagara Center in Buffalo, the foundation and the Buffalo Sabres will further the foundation’s mission by giving away 1,500 CO detectors to those in need. This will be the largest CO giveaway in the country. Those who receive a CO detector donation will be asked to fill out a brief survey.

“We just want to get these CO detectors in as many hands as we can to ensure that everyone is safe from carbon monoxide,” said Hansen.

Since its inception, the Amanda Hansen Foundation has donated more than 17,000 CO detectors and 26 furnaces to those in need. For more information on the Amanda Hansen Foundation or to make a donation, visit www.amandahansenfoundation.org.
