Elmwood Village Farmers Market continues on June 3 with free yoga class

May 30, 2017 | Lifestyles

The popular Elmwood Village Farmers Market, featuring nearly 40 vendors selling fresh, seasonal and local produce and products, continues on Saturday, June 3, at the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Bidwell Parkway in Buffalo’s historic Elmwood Village. Hours at the open-air market, a program of the Elmwood Village Association, are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday, rain or shine, through November.

Beginning June 3, the market is teaming up with HEAL Bflo to offer free weekly yoga classes from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturdays. Participants are asked to bring a yoga mat and a bottle of water. Classes will be offered on the east side of Elmwood Avenue, directly across the street from the weekly market.

The Food Bank of Western New York’s “Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables!” program, a federally funded SNAP-Ed program available through New York State, returns to the market on June 3. The goal of this obesity prevention nutrition education initiative is to promote fruit and vegetable consumption. A Registered Dietitian will be present at the market to conduct nutrition workshops for the public and provide nutritious recipes involving fruits and vegetables for participants to sample. The weekly recipes will utilize local, seasonal produce, and participants will receive $4 in “health bucks” which can be exchanged for produce from the farmers at the market. The program is free and open to any customers of the Elmwood Village Farmers Market.

Field & Fork Network’s “Double Up Food Bucks” program has returned to the market for its fourth season. The program provides low-income individuals who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits with a $1 for $1 match, up to $20, to purchase fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables. Please stop at the Elmwood Village Association tent during market hours for more information.

Providing musical entertainment on June 3 will be the Nickel City String Band from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Hosting the market’s community group tables will be West Side Community Services, United Healthcare and The Friends of the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter. Offering wine-tasting will be Eveningside Vineyards.
