Enjoy the Journey Art Gallery highlights upcoming classes and events

Eden artist John Merlino’s solo exhibit, “Universal Meditations,” will open at Enjoy the Journey Art Gallery in West Seneca from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 6. This exhibit taps into the artist’s creative, expressive, abstract, collage and mixed media expressions. His artwork is bold, makes statements and creates dialogue! 

A Pottery Workshop with artist Sara Goldhawk of Goldhawk Pottery, using the Sgraffito technique, will be offered from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 11. Sgraffito is defined as “a form of decoration made by scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of a contrasting color.” Similar to working on scratch board, you’ll make a black-and-white piece as you will be scratching black slip from white clay. More details can be found on the gallery’s website, and the cost is $45.

Wine, Women & Art with artist Andrea Oswald is running twice during the month of May – Thursday, May 12 (beautiful purple flowers on glasses) and Thursday, May 26 (white and orange daisy glasses). Sip some wine and enjoy tasty appetizers, too. All supplies are included in the $30 fee, so just bring a friend and have fun! To register, please call 675-0204.

A book-signing event and exhibit with artist, author and photographer Wendi Essrow for her book, “If You Listen to the Trees,” will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14. And an added treat, on view will be original artwork created by Essrow for her wonderful children’s book. You will also see a sneak preview of her upcoming book for adults, “Walking Slowly: Exploring the Back Roads of Western New York,” featuring her regional photography and poetry.

A Basket Weaving Workshop with Maureen Quale is scheduled from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 18. Learn the timeless art of basket weaving in this beginner class where you will create a “Cookies for Two” basket. This is a mini, market-style basket. Several accent colors will be available to make this keepsake truly one of a kind. The cost of this class is $35.

Zentangle Gems with artist Kelly Barone will take place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 19. The new trend of adding jewels to your Zentangle art is such fun and is a great blend of basic watercolor pencil art and tangling. In this class, inspired by the astounding work by Kae Yoshino, guests will explore how to incorporate gems into Zentangle art to create your very own realistic looking gems. Bring your beginner kit with you. The cost is $40.

A Wet Felted Flower Workshop with fiber artist Suzanne O’Brien will be offered from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 25. In only two hours you will learn the almost magical process of wet felting. Participants will start with soft wool and transform it into a beautiful felt flower decoration just by using warm water and soap! Prepare to be amazed. Please bring a plastic shopping bag to carry your wet project home. The cost is $40.

Seashell Zentangle with artist Kelly Barone takes place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 9. Join in an evening of Zentangles that will introduce the summer colors of turquoise and white. Work in a seashell designs while learning new Zentangle patterns! Please bring your beginner kit; the cost is $40.

Save the date! Garden Art Saturday takes place this year from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 18, and visitors can purchase one-of-a-kind items for their garden or patio. This event benefits the gallery’s art scholarship given each June to a West Seneca High School senior continuing their education in art this coming fall.

The gallery currently has openings for monthly exhibits. The cost is $400 which includes advertising, hanging and take down of the exhibit, an opening reception, three rooms and 170 linear feet of wall space. Please contact the gallery for details.
