Facilitator training offered for dementia art program

Jan 5, 2018 | Events

Facilitator training for the dementia art program, Memories in the Making (MIM), will be offered in the Southern Tier in January. This Alzheimer’s Association program allows people living with dementia to express themselves through watercolor painting with the guidance of trained facilitators. The Western New York Chapter is offering the training program for staff and volunteers at skilled nursing and assisted living facilities, and respite and adult day programs. Training is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 19, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse at 115 E. Main St. in Allegany. A fee of $25 per person covers the cost of the half-day training, all materials and snacks.

A background in the arts is not necessary to become a facilitator, which offers a number of benefits to program leaders and participants:

• Increased quality of life for residents
• Improves self-esteem, serves as an outlet for emotions, increases attention span and focus, reduces isolation and provides opportunity Increased expertise for employees
• Positive community exposure for facilities and programs

Pre-registration is required by Jan. 12 by calling the chapter office at 626-0600 or by sending an email to Andrea Koch at ak***@al*.org.
