Help needy families this holiday season

Oct 22, 2017 | Lifestyles

The holiday season is upon us! If you’re looking to give back and make a donation to an organization this year, consider West Seneca Cares for Kids, a program supporting less-fortunate families in the West Seneca Central School District.

Families are identified by school social workers from the five elementary, two middle and two high schools to receive money and spend it at K-Mart on winter clothes, boots and coats. The parents and children are given a specified time frame to visit the store before Christmas and use the donated funds. The amount of money they receive depends on the number of kids in the family, though they are required to pay taxes on their purchase.

Last year, a total of 36 families and 86 children had a warmer winter thanks to this program.

“It helps put clothes on the backs of families in our town at a tough time of the year where they’re saving to make ends meet,” Interim Superintendent Matthew Bystrak said. “It’s local, it’s direct and we have a good read on the people. This program doesn’t get abused. There is no downside to it.”
