Lessons at WILD All-Star Cheerleading go far beyond the mat

Sep 12, 2017 | Sports Scene

While some families register their children for classes at WILD All-Star Cheerleading in Orchard Park to learn the latest cheerleading, gymnastic and dance techniques, it’s the underlying lessons in self-confidence, teamwork, personal responsibility, respect, discipline, social responsibility and family that are providing skills that will last a lifetime.

“While we do our best to offer opportunities to meet the needs of every student that comes through our door, we also get to know each individual and help them set and reach goals, learn the value of commitment and teamwork, and ultimately see their dreams become a reality,” said Rebekah Stiller, WILD co-owner and co-founder. “Our ultimate goal is to create champions both on and off the mat!”

On the mat training includes a wide variety of programs and classes, including full-year cheer teams; Tiger Tots, a low-stress cheer and dance program for children 18 months to three years;  half-year prep cheer teams; a parent team; school teams; Ninja Warriors for boys ages 4 to 12; and CrossFlip high-intensity tumbling.

Wondercats, a program for individuals ages 5 to 55 with special needs, is yet another innovative program being offered.

“Our goal is to provide special needs athletes with the true experience of all-star cheerleading, from tumbling and stunting practices to the thrill of performing in front of a large crowd,” added co-owner and co-founder Jessica Szpylman. “We are unbelievably excited to embark on this great adventure and look forward to expanding our special needs program. The Wondercats team is coached by trained professionals and assisted by many of our athletes.”

Registrations are currently being accepted for dance, tumbling and half-year prep programs, and an open house for all programs will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21. The public is invited to tour the spacious facility at 227 Thorn Ave. in Orchard Park, watch the current All-Stars practice, meet the coaches and owners, and learn more about the programs offered.
