Mount Mercy Academy students serve the community

Nov 14, 2018 | Lifestyles

Mount Mercy Academy’s students and staff were busy serving the community during the month of October. One of the missions of Mount Mercy Academy is compassionate service. This mission was well met as the school assisted at St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy, Journey’s End, Our Lady of Black Rock School, Harvest House Baby Ministry, South Buffalo Community Table, Ronald McDonald House and Fantastic Friends.

Senior Madeline Szwed (Cheektowaga) coordinated a day of service with her fellow National Honor Society students at St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy. The students spent a holiday from school assisting the students at the Our Lady of Hope Home School at St. Luke’s and volunteered in other ways at the mission as well.

The junior class had their retreat in October where they spent the morning volunteering in the community. Students spent time at St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy, Journey’s End, Our Lady of Black Rock School, Harvest House Baby Ministry and the South Buffalo Community Table.

Several students assisted at the Fantastic Friends Halloween Party at Bishop Timon – St. Jude High School. Fantastic Friends provides experiences for children with disabilities.

The Mount Mercy volleyball teams, led by coaches Brittany Sanscrainte and Shannon Feind, had their annual Dig Pink game for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The group’s combined efforts with the students and the game activities raised $1,000.

Szwed again led a volunteer effort. This time she coordinated planning and preparing a dinner at Ronald McDonald House. The group served a Halloween-themed dinner for the guests at Ronald McDonald House.

In addition, senior Kayla Armbruster (Buffalo) organized an afternoon of pumpkin painting with her classmates and some of the sisters at the Mercy Center Convent. The afternoon also included cider, donuts and conversation.

Mount Mercy Academy will continue to live out the mission of compassionate service throughout the year.
