Niagara Parks to broadcast Tragically Hip show

Aug 14, 2016 | Entertainment

The Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) is excited to announce its participation in the Canadian Broadcast Corporation (CBC) presentation of “The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration,” which will be aired live on two large screens in Queen Victoria Park on Saturday, Aug. 20.

Admission to the event is free and all are invited to gather on the front lawn of Queen Victoria Place to see this special concert presentation, with the panoramic views of both the American and Canadian Horseshoe Falls serving as your backdrop. While the broadcast is set to begin at 8:30 p.m., visitors are invited to begin their celebrations earlier in the evening by participating in NPC’s fully licensed Great Canadian BBQ that will be taking place from 6 p.m. to midnight. Settle in a comfortable Muskoka chair or find one of the many picnic tables and enjoy great musical entertainment prior to the show from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitors are welcome to bring their own blankets and lawn chairs as well. No outside alcohol will be permitted on site.

“We are pleased to be taking part in this uniquely Canadian experience, joining the hundreds of thousands of other Canadians across the country in celebrating this concert performance of the Tragically Hip,” stated NPC Chair Janice Thomson. “We also would like to thank another great Canadian institution, the CBC, for allowing us the opportunity to showcase this concert to the thousands that will gather in Queen Victoria Park.”

“The Tragically Hip have contributed to our cultural landscape for decades and it’s fitting that we have the opportunity to celebrate their legacy together,” remarked Eleanor McMahon, Ontario’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport.

The CBC will broadcast the commercial-free concert, taking place in the band’s hometown of Kingston, Ontario from coast to coast on television and radio, as well as streaming it online. The CBC has provided NPC with special permission to live stream this event.

Those attending are being asked to consider making a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society to support the organization and its efforts to help fund more research projects dedicated to increasing the survival rates of those fighting brain cancer.
