Brocton High School will provide housing to the Spirit of Atlanta Drum & Bugle Corps on Aug. 1 when the musical athletes travel through Western New York for a performance in Rome, N.Y., on Aug. 2. The high school is located at 138 W. Main St. in Brocton.
Founded in 1976, Spirit of Atlanta quickly rose to drum corps prominence with a sixth-place finish in only the corps’ second season. Well known during its formative years for a huge brass sound and performances that evoked the soulful and sultry persona of its southern hometown region, the group has claimed a spot in the DCI World Championship Finals 20 times since 1978!
The squad will arrive at approximately 7 a.m. and depart at 11 p.m., and will rehearse throughout the day.
The top 10 corps in the world will also be competing in the 21st anniversary edition of Drums Along the Waterfront Tour of Champions at 6 p.m. Aug. 5 at New Era Field in Orchard Park. With 41 world titles among the 10 competing corps, included in the field are the reigning and 18-time world champion Blue Devils (Concord, CA) and the 2016 world champion Bluecoats (Canton, OH). Tickets for the event can be purchased at ticketmaster.com or by calling (800) 745-3000.
