Stand out from the ‘selfie’ crowd with a professional headshot

Apr 19, 2016 | Lifestyles

ESP LogoThere are countless reasons why an individual may require a professional headshot —  applying for a new position, a recent promotion at your current place of employment or being appointed to the board of a nonprofit organization are among the top reasons. But whatever the reason, it’s always best to be prepared with both knowledge and the name and number of an experienced headshot photographer.

“A professional headshot is often your first opportunity to make a positive impression,” said Elizabeth Snyder, owner of Elizabeth Snyder Photography, LLC of Grand Island. “Some companies are now requiring a profile image along with a resume at an in-person interview, so planning in advance is key. And in today’s ‘selfie’ world, you will really stand out and show your professionalism.

“When posting an image to a professional social media site like Linkedin, employers want to see that you took the time and effort to entice them,” Snyder continued. “A good headshot will get you the ‘clicks’ you want from prospective employers. For business entrepreneurs, a great headshot is equally as important for showing both your personality and professionalism.”

While anyone can take a headshot, a professional photographer will make sure that the photo is taken in the correct light, at the most flattering angle and with the proper equipment.

Following are some tips to help you find the proper photographer for your headshot:

• Meet prospective photographers in person to make sure you are both on the same page regarding your photography needs. Topics to discuss may include wardrobe, background, jewelry, hair, makeup, personality and crop. If a face-to-face meeting is not possible, insist on an in-depth Skype or telephone interview.

• Your photographer should have a portfolio of past work to show off the different personalities and types of headshots that he or she has taken in the past. If these portraits do not “wow” you, move on to a better fit for your style or brand.

• Headshot sessions can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours, depending on your needs. Your photographer should guide you comfortably through several different poses in order to give you a high-quality final gallery to choose from.

Elizabeth Snyder Photography offers a unique experience in headshot photography that includes a free consultation to discuss wardrobe, hair, makeup, etc. On our portrait day, you will receive “VIP” treatment that includes beverages, snacks and a one-of-a-kind personalized photo shoot with complementary hair and makeup design.

After your photo session, you will meet again to see all of your professionally retouched images beautifully displayed in print. Each print purchased will also come with a digital file for you to share and use however you’d like.

“Put away the selfie stick, stand out from the crowd and show that you take your career seriously,” said Snyder.
