West Seneca East dugout campaign receives donation in honor of Jeff Sgroi

May 31, 2017 | Sports Scene

West Seneca East Senior High School’s technology students decided to come together this year and work on a class project to benefit the school and their peer athletes. Under the guidance of technology teachers Joe Cook and Dave Kutina, the students selected to build new dugouts for the varsity softball and baseball fields.

In order to build the dugouts, the school reached out to the community asking for donations. Peter Sgroi reached out to the school and the East Senior Spirit Boosters and made a donation in memory of his brother, Jeff, a former East standout baseball player.

Jeff Sgroi was diagnosed with Stage IV Melanoma in mid-January of 2015 and died three weeks later at the age of 45. He graduated from East in 1988, made the baseball team at Le Moyne College as a walk-on and finished his college career with an all-conference season at Niagara. He spent 20 years as a player and coach for West Seneca in the MUNY League.

Funds were donated from the Jeff Michael Sgroi charitable foundation through money raised at the first annual JMS Golf Tournament held at Harvest Hill last summer. The timing was perfect as May is Melanoma Awareness Month. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and over 160,000 Americans are expected to receive this diagnosis in 2017. You can help prevent melanoma by seeking shade whenever possible, wearing protective clothing, avoiding direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and using broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF of at least 30 every day. Take the #GetNaked pledge. It just might save your life. Visit melanoma.org for more information.
