It’s amazing how much one great idea can help grow a small business. That’s exactly what happened at Buffalo Solar Solutions, resulting in a year that can only be described as a whirlwind.
It was around this time one year ago when Quinn Porzio, project manager for Buffalo Solar Solutions, a locally owned solar panel company located in South Buffalo, went to owners Tyler and Alicia Uebelhoer with an idea to create a 360-degree virtual realty (VR) video of a rooftop solar installation right here in Western New York — in the dead of winter — to show that conversion to solar is possible anywhere, and at any time of year. It didn’t take long for Porzio to convince the owners that he had a winning idea. And it didn’t take the solar industry long to recognize Buffalo Solar Solutions for bringing the idea to reality with the help of Crosswater Digital Media LLC.
Filming for the VR experience took place in December 2017 during a rooftop solar panel installation in Pavilion, N.Y., a small town in Genesee County. The unveiling took place in March during the annual Buffalo Home Show in downtown Buffalo, where attendees were given an opportunity to put on VR goggles and view an actual installation reduced down to just under four minutes.
In July, Solar Power World, one of the industry’s leading publications, named Buffalo Solar Solutions one of the nation’s top solar contractors, earning the local company an invitation to attend the publication’s annual gala in Anaheim, Calif., in September. Tyler Uebelhoer and Porzio accepted the invitation to the prestigious industry event, where they received a plaque noting their honor.
But that wasn’t all. The duo from Buffalo was also called to the stage to receive another award for “Most Forward-Thinking Contractor” in the nation! It was truly a humbling moment for the local natives and their solar family back in Buffalo.
While out west, Uebelhoer and Porzio took the opportunity to attend Solar Power International’s (SPI) massive trade show in Anaheim. The event, sponsored by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), features exhibitions from a wide variety of solar industry suppliers specializing in modules, racking, batteries, inverters, financing options, apps and more. Attending the SPI trade show allowed the pair to see firsthand how different trends and technologies are being implemented in the solar industry, and consider how these ideas might impact the business operations of Buffalo Solar Solutions.
“As a small company that focuses on customer service and quality installations over quantity, we look ahead to what we can become, but also stop to celebrate what we’ve been able to achieve in only a few short years,” said Uebelhoer. “Having an opportunity to walk onstage in Anaheim with other solar industry leaders from across the country tells us that our commitment to unmatched customer service is really paying off.”
“Especially in this part of the country, we try to focus on educating customers,” Porzio added. “We aren’t trying to redesign the solar wheel, we just want to help people better understand solar energy.”
