A home for Jane this Christmas: Will you open your heart?

Dec 25, 2015 | Lifestyles

You may recall a story that was placed in a local newspaper in September about a beautiful dog named Jane who was seeking a loving home. An overwhelming response from WNY residents to adopt Jane came through via phone calls to the SPCA of Niagara and Jane was adopted a few short days later. The SPCA volunteers were ecstatic for their friend Jane, but unfortunately it turned out Jane was not the best match for the person who adopted her. She was returned a short while later.

“Jane was having a very similar issue she was having in the shelter,” said Christine Porto, volunteer at the SPCA. “When she is behind a fence or gate she tends to bark and jump and she needs to be introduced to the neighbors.”

When strangers approached Jane at the SPCA before she was adopted, she would go to the back of the kennel and hide or she would jump at the gate, the same behavior she did at the adopter’s house. This turned adopters off, but she is simply nervous and afraid and needs someone that can take the time to love her and introduce her to her surroundings so she can feel comfortable and adjusted. That’s why instead of bringing Jane back to the shelter, Porto decided to foster Jane in her own home, so that she could feel loved and appreciated.

“She’s really made a lot of progress since being adopted and has really come a long way,” said Porto. “I didn’t want to bring her back into the shelter and have her backslide into her old habits.”

Now Porto takes the time to make sure Jane will be a success in her next home. Porto says that Jane is so well behaved and listens to commands. She is not destructive when Porto leaves the home for eight hours to go to work and she is house trained.

“You just have to have the patience and the time to love her,” said Porto. “She truly is a wonderful dog.”

Jane loves to play outside and splash in the kiddie pool in the summer. She also likes to snuggle and give hugs and kisses. She weighs around 50 pounds and would make a good companion for a family with older children or even a single person looking for a best friend. She would have to be the only dog in the home and she cannot live with a cat, only because she thinks it’s fun to chase them. The adoption fee for Jane is $110 and includes spay, michrochip, up-to-date shots, and one free vet visit. To learn more about adopting sweet Jane, please call the SPCA of Niagara at 731-4368.
