Bishop to bless new parish center at St. Leo the Great in Amherst

Feb 3, 2017 | In the News

St. Leo the Great Parish is pleased to announce the dedication of their new parish center. Bishop Richard J. Malone of the Diocese of Buffalo will celebrate a Dedication Mass at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, followed by a blessing of the new facility located at 885 Sweet Home Road. A reception will follow and all are invited to celebrate the grand opening of the new facility in Amherst.

After many months of construction, the new parish center is complete with automatic sliding glass doors added to the front entrance of the church, making it accessible and welcoming to all. The mission for the parish center is to provide space to accommodate parish events as well as host local community functions such as seminars and receptions. The grand opening, which is open to the public, is designed to showcase the facility to all.

“We are grateful to the parish building committee, Scheid Architects, and Leigh Construction, and for all of their hard work. After many months of planning and construction we are excited and prepared to present this facility to the Bishop for a blessing and to parishioners and friends to utilize,” said Msgr. Robert E. Zapfel, S.T.D., pastor of St. Leo the Great. “It is my prayer that this space will bring people together both in the parish and in the wider community.”

St. Leo the Great Church was founded in 1953. The closing of the school building in 2014 limited the parish’s capacity to hold large events. Adding the parish center and activities center for the youth and the food pantry for the poor will provide the extra space necessary to accommodate the needs of a growing parish community. Donations are also gratefully appreciated as they continue to furnish the interior.

The St. Leo the Great parish center is the newest addition to its campus. For more information or if you would like to donate a specific item, please contact the parish office at 835-8905 or visit www.stleothegreatamherst.com.
