ECVA is the first ophthalmologic practice in Erie County to utilize Diopsys Vision Testing System

The doctors of Eye Care & Vision Associates (ECVA) are pleased to announce the addition of new technology to ECVA’s ophthalmology and optometry practice. The Diopsys Vision Testing System ( helps in the early detection and treatment of chronic eye conditions relating to diabetes, glaucoma, macular edema and others by providing painless, non-invasive vision tests that use electrophysiological technology to measure electrical activity between the eye and the brain.

ECVA is the first medical practice in Erie County to utilize the Diopsys Vision Testing System, which will be available at all four ECVA offices throughout Western New York.

Diopsys uses a technology called Visual Evoke Potential (VEP) to objectively measure the electrical activity in the vision system. As an image enters the eye it is converted into electrical activity at the retina and travels to the brain, the VEP measures the strength of signal that reaches your brain.

The Electroretinography (ERG) test measures the function of the retina, the light-sensitive layer in the back of the eye. The ERG measures and records how well the cells of the retina are conveying electrical impulses within the eye. This information allows the doctors to better plan treatment (if needed) and monitor the results.

“This technology adds valuable information as we consider the management and treatment of serious chronic eye conditions,” says Daniel Cotter, MD, managing partner of ECVA. “With Diopsys, we are able to detect damage to nerve cells of the visual system before they actually get sick or die off permanently, so that diseases such as glaucoma can be diagnosed, tracked and treated before the vision loss actually occurs.”
