Goin’ Bald for Bucks at Northwood Elementary

Mar 18, 2018 | In the News

Northwood Elementary School in West Seneca is proud to announce that students, staff and parents raised a grand total of $11,833 for Bald for Bucks during an event held at the school on Friday, March 9.

The elementary school has been participating in this event since 2011 and over the last seven years has raised a grand total of $58,459.75. This year was the second-highest fundraising amount since Northwood started participating in Bald for Bucks.

The school’s top student fundraisers, who were recognized by Roswell, are:
• Trevor Felker, grade 3, $2,100
• Ty Talty-Reese, grade 4, $1,165
• Thomas Mangione, grade 1, $850

Mr. Loughran, part of Northwood’s physical education department, raised $2,335 in honor of a family member.

This year, Northwood had 19 students and one teacher participating in Bald for Bucks, along with over 200 other students who donated money to have their hair sprayed purple. Seventeen students had their heads shaved during the event. Many of the students who participated this year have previously participated or had family members who have participated in Bald for Bucks at Northwood.

Following in his older brother’s footsteps, first grader Drake Walters shaved his head while wearing a T-shirt shirt that had the names of many people whose lives were touched by cancer.

There were also many newcomers to Bald for Bucks this year, including Keira Blakeslee who shaved her head as well as Hannah Scibor and Hannah Fernandez who each donated eight-inches of their hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths.

In addition to the amazing amount of participation and money raised this year, Northwood will be featured in Roswell Park’s Bald for Bucks promotional video. Student Peyton Leszkowicz, who has participated three years in a row along with his twin brother, Preston, was interviewed for the video as well as several staff members, including fourth grade teacher and cancer survivor Dr. Angiers.

A special thank you goes out to all of Northwood’s dedicated students, faculty, parents and the PTO who made this event possible. The school would also like to send a huge thank you to stylists Anna and Judy from Corto’s, Jackelyn Rydza and parent volunteer Stacie Baker.
