Mount Mercy announces athletic award winners

Mount Mercy Academy recently held an Athletic Awards evening. Included in the evening was the recognition and honoring of all athletes. Members of the teams received their letters and pins, as well as special awards for Most Valuable and Most Improved Athletes and the Coach’s Award winners.

Athletic Director Michael Hardy presented special awards to the Most Valuable Athletes, the athlete that the coach felt the team contributed the most to the team’s success; the Coach’s Award which is given to the athlete who exhibits the best effort, attitude, dedication and team spirit; and the Most Improved Athlete given to the girl whose skills progress the most throughout the course of the season.

Junior Gemma McIlroy (Hamburg) was the Most Valuable Runner on the cross-country team, sophomore Addison Barth (Hamburg) earned the Coach’s Award and freshman Bella Scarcello (Buffalo) was the Most Improved.

Sophomore Meghan Balen (Cheektowaga) was the Most Valuable Player on the varsity volleyball team. Junior Bella Maloney (Lakeview) garnered the Coach’s Award and senior Grace Spero (Buffalo) was the Most Improved Player.

Coach Maddie Higgins presented sophomore First Team All-Catholic and Player of the Year Rosalie Bandura (West Seneca) with the Most Valuable Player for the soccer team and senior Madison Edwards (Buffalo) won the Coach’s Award.  Junior Brenna Berhalter (Buffalo) was named the Most Improved.

Coach Kate Lynch handed out the Most Valuable Golfer Awards to sophomores Lacey Sheehan (Orchard Park) and Barth. Sheehan was a First Team All-Catholic and Barth was a Second Team All-Catholic. Junior Megan Amicone (Buffalo) won the Coach’s Award. 

For JV Volleyball, sophomore Emma Labby (Lakeview) was named the Most Valuable Player, the Coach’s Award was given to sophomore Quinn D’Anthony (Buffalo) and the Most Improved was freshman Isabelle Reaska (West Seneca). 

JV Basketball Coach Kerry McGough awarded the Most Valuable Player to freshman Taylor Jahn (Buffalo). Freshman Meghan Bell (Buffalo) won the Coach’s Award and freshman Serenity Raynor (Buffalo) was the Most Improved.

Mya Wood, a Third Team All-Catholic pick, was awarded the Most Valuable Player on the varsity basketball team. Junior Maggie Bell (Buffalo) was given the Coach’s Award and senior Desiree Diaz-Torres (Lackawanna) was named the Most Improved.

Coach Matt Ondesko presented Barth with the Most Valuable Athlete on the tennis team. The Coach’s Award was given to freshman Mairin Kearns (Hamburg) and sophomore Julia Rosado (Buffalo) was the Most Improved Athlete.

Freshman pitcher Jahn, a Second Team All-Catholic (Buffalo), was the Most Valuable Player for the softball team. Junior Trinity Kehoe (Derby) received the Coach’s Award and junior Madison Serafini (Buffalo) was named the Most Improved Player.

Junior Abby Mailloux (Buffalo), a Second Team All-Catholic selection, was named the Most Valuable Athlete on the lacrosse team. Junior Jenna Brown (Buffalo) was honored with the Coach’s Award and freshman Ellie Hart (Buffalo) was tabbed as the Most Improved Player.
