Niagara Parks Whirlpool Golf Course set to open

Mar 31, 2016 | Sports Scene

With milder temperatures upon us and golfers ready to start the season, The Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) is pleased to announce that its Whirlpool Golf Course will officially open on Thursday, April 7.

The 2016 golf season will mark the 65th anniversary of the opening of Whirlpool, one of Canada’s most highly rated and renowned public golf courses. In 2015, SCOREGolf Magazine rated Whirlpool the 49th best public golf course in Canada and 12th best in terms of value.

Whirlpool Golf Course was designed by prominent golf course architect Stanley Thompson. Thompson made his mark designing some of the most prestigious courses in Canada – with many located in some of the most beautiful national and provincial parks in this country — including Banff, Jasper and Fundy National Park.

In celebration of the opening of Whirlpool and the soon to be opened Ussher’s Creek, Battlefield and Chippawa courses at NPC’s 45-hole Legends on the Niagara Golf Complex, special spring pricing of $55 for weekday and $65 weekend rates with cart (taxes extra) will be in place until May 13. NPC will also continue to offer its popular All Access golf booklet in 2016, providing the avid golfer with 20 or 50 game packages, which are good at any one of its courses. For full pricing and program details, please visit www.niagaraparksgolf.com.

In honor of the 65th anniversary of Whirlpool Golf Course, Niagara Parks Golf will once again host the Niagara Parks Amateur tournament on Aug. 7. One of the oldest and most celebrated amateur golf tournaments in the Niagara Region, the Niagara Parks Amateur was first played in 1961. Over the years, the tournament has consistently attracted many of the top amateurs in Ontario competing for the historic F.M. Cairns Trophy. Since the event began, no winner has ever shot better than 70, showing that Whirlpool has stood the test of time as a true challenge to the best in golf. The winner of the 2015 tournament, Mike Claxton, with a winning score of 71 (34 on the front, 37 on the back) will be defending his title.

Whirlpool Golf Course, Oak Hall Par 3 and Legends on the Niagara Golf Complex are owned and operated by The Niagara Parks Commission. NPC is committed to a vision of Ontario’s Niagara Parks as one that preserves a rich heritage, conserves natural wonders, and inspires people world-wide. Founded in 1885, NPC is an Operational Enterprise Agency of the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport. Its mission is to protect the natural and cultural heritage along the Niagara River for the enjoyment of visitors while maintaining financial self-sufficiency.
