Bishop Timon – St. Jude High School’s first-ever Tiger Trot 5K will honor the entire Overdorf family for its commitment to not only Timon but to Catholic education and the South Buffalo and First Ward communities.
“In August 1946, a young friar, Fr. Eugene Shea, Timon’s first athletic director, dropped into my parents’ mom & pop grocery store in the First Ward. Thus began a 72-year, unbroken relationship between Bishop Timon, the Franciscans and the Overdorf family. We are delighted, all 55 of us, to be honored by a school we love so much. Go Timon!” said Ted Overdorf, a member of Timon’s class of 1960.
The Tiger Trot 5K will take place on Friday, May 18, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Timon. The Tiger Trot 5K is a certified 5K course along beautiful McKinley Parkway. The registration fee is $22, or $25 on race day. Fee includes a T-shirt (for the first 150 registrants) and the post-race party at Timon, with food, beverages, prizes and more! Race day packet pick-up starts at 5 p.m. Non-runner after-party admission is $15.
All proceeds will benefit the Fr. Joel A. Campbell, OFM Memorial Scholarship at Timon. To register, please visit www.bishoptimon.com/Tiger-Trot-5K or for more information contact Michelle Patterson, race director, at email@example.com. Sponsorship opportunities are available.
The Overdorf family has been part of Timon since the school’s beginnings. Peg and Ossie Overdorf became good friends with the five original founding Friars when they were brought to South Buffalo and The First Ward to encourage families to send their sons to the newly formed Bishop Timon High School. Since 1946, over 14 members of the Overdorf family have attended Timon. Eight have attended Mount Mercy Academy.
“I am sure that my mom and dad would be proud of our family legacy at Timon, one which they pioneered so many years ago,” stated Gene Overdorf, a member of Timon’s Class of 1971 and Timon’s Dean of Student Affairs and earth science teacher.
The Tiger Trot is the first race in the new South Buffalo Run Series, comprised of seven races of various distances traversing the area’s most scenic routes. The runs include the Tiger Trot 5K, Mount Mercy 5K, Father Baker’s Father’s Day 5K, Seneca Street Mile, Notre Dame Fun Run, Scrub Run 5K and the Ryan Purcell Memorial 5K.
Results from all seven races will be tabulated to determine the overall and age group awards. Medals will be distributed to individuals who completes all races included in the series.
