Although the school year may be winding down, Mount Mercy Academy students and staff continue to participate in many service opportunities. This year campus minister and senior theology teacher Mary Colby asked members of the senior class to plan and coordinate a service project and encouraged all Mount Mercy students and staff to participate in various volunteer opportunities.
The month of April began with preparing dinner for the guests at Ronald McDonald House. The group made chicken enchiladas, lime cilantro rice, green salad, fruit salad and chocolate caramel cookies for dessert to serve to the appreciative guests at Ronald McDonald House.
Fundraising projects for the Mercy Rising project continued. The Mercy Rising project is a collaborative effort of all Mercy schools throughout the world to address global critical concerns. This year the Mercy schools are helping to build a medical clinic in Haiti and providing support for clean water initiatives in the Philippines.
Senior Emily Harper (Buffalo) led a service project at the Mercy Center. The group enjoyed coloring Easter eggs and chatting with the sisters. Also in April, five students and two faculty members spent the afternoon cleaning at Harvest House. Freshmen Raeanna Gott and Bitsat Yitayeh of Buffalo, junior Olivia Larson of Orchard Park, and seniors Megan Cycon of West Seneca and Alesia Hamm of Buffalo, along with guidance counselor Jessica Bakkila and Colby, cleaned their way from the bottom to the top of Harvest House.
During Spring Break, Sister Jenny Wilson, RSM and a group of adventurous students left for Guyana, South America for a spring break service trip with a group from Our Lady of Mercy in Rochester. The group volunteered at an orphanage and worked on several other projects while they were gone. Freshmen Mara Santana and Madison Edwards; sophomores Haley Browner, Anani Debose and Janiah Ball; and juniors Tierney Ashe and Taliyah Shabazz of Buffalo and Hope Willert and Julia Orcutt of West Seneca took part in this trip.
The Mount Mercy community continues to follow Catherine McAuley’s vision of compassionate service and affirming the dignity and uniqueness of individuals.
