Study reveals new facts on American attitudes towards pet nutrition

Apr 8, 2017 | Lifestyles

(Welcome to the weekly pet column of Pet Connection Programs Inc. of Marilla, N.Y. A new article is posted each week, so be sure to check back on a regular basis!)

With National Pet Day (April 11) reminding us how much we love our pampered pooches and coddled cats, a new survey from Open Farm pet food has revealed some startling new facts on what today’s pet parents are looking for when it comes to feeding their furry loved ones.

Ninety-four percent of American pet owners indicated that their pet’s nutrition is just as important as their family’s nutrition, while 43 percent stated that they would be eating healthier meals if they ate their pet’s food.

“As the trend to health and wellness becomes more pronounced in the human world, pet parents are becoming far more conscious of finding superior quality foods to support the overall health and well-being of their pets,” says Isaac Langleben, co-founder of Open Farm. “Open Farm pet foods uses the highest quality ingredients that are ethically sourced from farm to bowl. Much like in the consumer foods segment, consumers are looking for healthy, natural solutions that also have a positive impact on animal welfare and the environment.”

Other study highlights include:
• 84 percent of pet owners agree they pay as much attention to the ingredients that go into their pet’s food as the ingredients their family eats.
• 89 percent of pet owners agree that it’s important that the ingredients in their pet’s food are ethically sourced.
• Nine out of 10 Americans say it’s important that the pet food they purchase provides transparency of ingredients.

“Transparency and traceability of our ingredients are very important to us and to our customers,” continues Langleban. “We have a unique and ethical supply chain and provide detailed information on our website about the source of each ingredient we use in our products.”
